Translate & generate EDI files

The fastest and most reliable way to view and edit your EDI files. All EDI transactions are accurately transposed into JSON according to predefined models. Each model describes the overall structure of an EDI transaction, such as an invoice or a medical claim. Modify or create X12 or EDIFACT interchange(s) from scratch and export them to EDI files.

Translate from EDI files

Upload and parse X12 or EDIFACT files automatically. All transactions in an EDI file are transposed according to their specifications, displayed in separate tabs for quick viewing and reference.

You can also translate according to a custom model that you had built to match partner-specific requirements.

Generate EDI files

Build EDI files quickly, either from scratch or by editing a parsed file. Start with EDI represented as JSON to insert, edit or delete segments, loops or data elements. Use the model to work out the underlying transaction structure.

Switch between compact and full model representation by turning on/off the "Ignore null values" setting.

Common questions about EDI translation

What is EDI translated to?

The data in the EDI file is translated to or from JSON. The JSON structure and the general format of any EDI transaction are driven by its EDI specification/mapping. We use OpenAPI to create a machine-friendly version of the specs; for example, here is an interactive view of the 837 P professional claim model.

All our pre-built models match the official specifications to the letter (X12, EDIFACT, HIPAA, EANCOM, IATA, VDA). You can configure your own custom versions or create new ones from scratch, by importing EDI specs/mappings in any of the following formats: SEF (Standard Exchange Format), EdiFabric (EDI Templates) and our native OpenAPI 3, in JSON or YAML.

Can I also generate EDI files?

Absolutely, by editing the JSON representation of your EDI data, you can convert it back to EDI with a single click. Specify the EDI delimiters explicitly or use the default set. You can also generate automatic 997/999 acknowledgments for X12 or CONTRL for EDIFACT.

How configurable is it?

You can either translate to or from EDI automatically or according to a custom model that you've built for a particular trading partner. The translated JSON can be viewed in two modes, compact, to show all data elements with values only, and full, to show the complete transaction structure.

Both EDI and JSON editors come with customizable themes.
